“What is karma?” was one of those fundamental questions I was wondering about for most of my life. It is also the subject of this episode of the “Think Zing!” series. My first personal development mentor, Bill Harris, one of the teachers from “The Secret”, sais karma means the act of doing. It means our own actions, our own doings from now. I have accepted Bill’s teachings about karma because his point made sense to me.
“Still, others commit all sorts of evil deeds, claiming karma doesn’t exist. They erroneously maintain that since everything is empty, committing evil isn’t wrong. Such persons fall into a hell of endless darkness with no hope of release. Those who are wise hold no such conception.”
Before I’ll explore more on this idea of our doings from now, I want to clarify what I have often found that most people believe about karma when they refer to it. According to many people, karma is some sort of final punishment, a divine kind of punishment, like a final bill we must pay:
Punishment for our sins!
I don’t want to offend anybody, but, just when I see divine and punishment in the same sentence, I see an oxymoron. A paradox; and I love paradoxes, but, this is another subject.
So, what is karma, then?
The final judgment and the eternal suffering for all the terrible things we have done in this lifetime. Or, the idea that we must pay this terrible bill for the sins we have accumulated in our previous past lives, thus we must pay in this life with a terrible suffering, poverty and what not…
Well, I don’t know about that?!
Let’s think a little, here!
As I’ve learned, karma means our doings, the act of doing our doings from right now. Right now, since, we cannot act, or do something in the past or in the future! Now, is really all we have!
Even the ideas of past lives, as we call them are not quite accurate since there really is no past or future, I’ve learned. Everything is now. Those aspects we refer to, as past lives are truly parallel realities, simultaneously being in existence at various vibratory rates, in a multidimensional and multifaceted Universe.
We have created the idea of past, present, and future as fantastic tools we use on this planet, very efficient tools otherwise, to measure development, growth, and fulfillment, as we perceive them. In reality, we only have the NOW. You are reading now, you have a thought now, I “speak” to you now. An idea informs you now; a new vision springs forth from within you, right now. You give it a meaning, now.
It is all, now.
So in this light, what is karma? It is more like a universal law of cause and effect. It doesn’t mean though that we have to be punished or stuck because of what we did in our past since there really is no past. Now is all we have.
We live a string of now moments from cradle to grave. Karma is our choice of this present moment. Everything you are, have, see, feel, it’s a choice, and you can only choose now. Now is all you have.
So, what is karma, again? For me, karma is the truth about this now moment. All fluid. It can change into another moment of now. Therefore, it is the cause and the effect of our choices. Our choices are the very beliefs we have, all day and all night, about ourselves, our world and the other people. When we don’t like our life, and we call it bad karma, why not call it: bad choices?
Think about it!
We can also call karma the unexamined unconscious beliefs we were spoonfed with as kids, which we hold to be truths, and, which may not be matching with our desired uplifted vibration from right now. Since our beliefs and our preferences don’t match anymore, our doings from now may turn un-resourceful, and, that is another way to define karma.
In the coming episode, we’ll discuss How to achieve enlightenment?
Until then, be well.
